Master Technician Programme |
Course Content
This course is designed for garage service technicians who carry out gasoline emissions testing and diagnosis on vehicle engine management systems. The aim of this course is to provide delegates with the skills and knowledge required to work with confidence and efficiency on emissions related problems. This will enable them to effectively progress through the essential test steps required for system evaluation, fault diagnosis and repair.
Techniques covered will include typical interrogation of the onboard self-diagnosis system, in conjunction with testing of the system via analysis of the exhaust gases using emissions test equipment.
Modules and subject areas
The course is divided into linked modules and subject areas, which allow the essential underpinning theory and practical skills knowledge to be delivered effectively. The modules and subject areas cover the following topics:
• Primary exhaust gas constituents and the catalytic converter
• Exhaust gas emissions values and gas relationships
• Emissions faults diagnosis via interpretation of gas values
• Emissions control legislation - On Board Diagnosis (OBD)
• The OBD operational modes - diagnostic tester understanding
Attainment
On successful completion of VSG 17 delegates will be able to:
| • |
Distinguish the fault indications made by each of the individual exhaust gases and use exhaust gas readings to aid in pinpointing engine running faults. |
| • |
Carry out diagnostic test routines to enable the correlation and assessment of exhaust gas values with diagnostic port information. |
| • |
Utilise all available OBD diagnostic modes for the evaluation of vehicle faults. |
Prerequisites
The successful completion of courses VSE 1, VSE 2 and VSG 5 is a prerequisite to attending VSG 17. Delegates should be familiar with typical 4-gas analyser and diagnostic tester operation and prior attendance on the appropriate equipment user’s courses is strongly recommended.
Assessment and Certification
The tests and practical tasks will be carried out using Bosch test equipment, System information, training notes and course material.
Delegates will be expected to complete a course examination.
A certificate of competence will be issued to those achieving a pass mark of 70% or over.
To obtain full Master Technician status the delegate is required to complete the Master Technician, one day practical and theory test. Upon successful completion, the delegate will be awarded with Bosch Master Technician status and certificate, awarded by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).
Accreditation
All Bosch Master Technician programme courses are co-certified by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) QAA scheme.
