Bosch Training Course - VSTD9

Bosch Diagnosis Using the Oscilloscope Intro (VSTD9)

Course Title : Diagnosis Using the Oscilloscope Introduction
Course Code : VSTD 9
Duration : 2 Days
Available Dates : TBA
Forms Part of : Diagnostic Technician Programme

Course Content

This course has been developed for garage service technicians who carry out fault diagnosis testing on vehicle systems, electrical circuits and components. This course is specific to an introduction of the skills required to use a typical Automotive Oscilloscope as an aid to fault diagnosis. The oscilloscope is more widely available and is being used more to test signals passing between the system electronic control unit and its respective actuators and sensors. The theoretical and practical instruction will provide technicians who have a thorough understanding of vehicle electrical testing using multi-meters, with the skills required for operation and application of a typical oscilloscope.

Modules and subject areas

The course is divided into linked modules and subject areas, which allow the essential underpinning theory and practical skills knowledge to be delivered effectively. The modules and subject areas cover the following topics:

• Preliminary review of the oscilloscope
• Display, controls adjustments and settings
• Connections and test methods
• Waveform display methods
• Waveform interpretation and analysis
• Typical defective signals
• Typical applications and signals

Attainment

On successful completion of VSTD 9 delegates will be able to:

Connect a typical automotive oscilloscope to a vehicle system and display the signal so that it can be clearly seen and remain stable on the scope display.
Adjust typical oscilloscope controls and settings to alter and change the signal displayed so that individual parts of the signal waveforms can be analysed.
Analyse and compare wave forms to determine indications of signal input / output response, fault areas and periods of signal failure or interference.

Prerequisites

Completion of course VSE 1 “Essential Test Procedures” is a prerequisite to attending VSTD 9 and delegates should be conversant with the electrical values of voltage, current, resistance and the use of a multi-meter. Prior attendance on the appropriate equipment user’s courses is recommended.

Assessment and Certification

The practical tasks will be carried out using Bosch oscilloscope equipment.

Delegates will be expected to complete a course examination.

A certificate of competence will be issued to those achieving a pass mark of 70% or over.

To obtain full Diagnostic Technician status the delegate is required to complete the Diagnostic Technician, one day practical and theory test. Upon successful completion, the delegate will be awarded with Bosch Diagnostic Technician status and certifi cate, awarded by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).

Accreditation

All Bosch Diagnostic Technician programme courses are co-certified by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) QAA scheme.
