Who needs to use a tacho?
Drivers and operators of goods vehicles whether
used privately or commercially are subject to driver rules. It is the responsibility of both drivers and employers to ensure that they comply
with these drivers’ hours and tachograph rules.
What are the penalties for breaking these rules?
Enforcement of these rules are undertaken by the Licensing
Authorities, through the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and the
Police.
There is, at this time, a level 4 fine (currently up
to £2,500) for breach of the drivers’ hours rules and a level 5 fine (currently up to £5,000) for failing to install or use a tachograph. Deliberate falsification of
tachograph records can result in 2 years imprisonment and/or a fine.
Convictions
may be taken into account by Licensing Authorities in deciding whether to grant or
renew an operator’s licence or HGV driver’s licence.
What exactly are the rules on driving?
